Chapter Nineteen: Tate

The shelter was out of town. Tate hadn’t counted on that. The others were full, as it had turned out, and the beta behind the reception desk in the dimly lit shelter he’d first arrived at had made some phone calls and directed him to a bus stop.

Then Tate had to sit down in one of the plastic chairs until the room stopped spinning, and had to tell the beta that he had no money. Luke had left him some but he hadn’t found it in his blind dash out of the apartment, desperate to leave.

The beta had shot him a pitying look, then he’d taken down all sorts of info about Tate—name, age, origin, education. He’d also asked if Tate was pregnant.

Tate had said no.

He wasn’t sure, though. Vague nausea gripping him in the mornings, light-headedness, sensitive nipples... What if he was pregnant, after all?

And yet he’d found himself mistrustful of the beta and had said no anyway. Shelters were supposed to be safe places for omegas, right? He had no idea why he felt such mistrust.

Maybe it was the sadness and fear that gripped him, turning the unknown world into a scary place. He’d never been alone outside the Academy, and had only left Luke’s apartment once to visit Zach. The city was an unfamiliar landscape. The looks people gave him seemed hostile and suspicious in the gray morning light.

The beta gave him coin to take the bus, promised that he’d called and they’d be expecting him at the other shelter. That he’d be safe.

It didn’t feel like it, and yet the pain of leaving Luke masked most other feelings, including fear. Adjusting the strap of his bag over his shoulder, he stepped off the bus and walked into the dingy reception of the shelter. It was at the end of the bus line, half-hidden behind a row of cypresses, drab and gray.

Yeah, he felt nothing. No frisson of fear or apprehension, no doubting what he was doing there, why he hadn’t stayed to see if Luke would return.

Maybe resignation. He felt that. Quiet despair. He’d hung on to hope too much, too long. That thread had finally snapped, letting him hurtle into the dark void. He didn’t want to face his friends, face his failure. Face the truth of the matter.

He wasn’t who Luke wanted. No amount of trying could change that, not when Luke had someone else. Tate couldn’t compete. Wasn’t going to destroy someone else’s happiness.

He was shown to a room with bunkbeds. Another omega slept on one of the top bunks, but it was otherwise empty.

Without a word, Tate took the other top bunk, used his bag as extra pillow, wrapped himself up in the thin blanket he found there and went to sleep.

***

Tate slept on and off as the days and nights passed and blurred. It was as if his body was shutting down—or maybe he was catching up on lost sleep from all the worry he’d gone through in the past weeks.
